Aboriginal Early Childhood Oral Health Project

The Aboriginal Early Childhood Oral Health (AECOH) Project was an initiative by the Centre for Oral Health Strategy (COHS) and funded by the Centre for Aboriginal Health (CAH) which came off the back of research that found Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in New South Wales were disadvantaged in terms of oral health.

The aim of this project was to review and develop resources for Aboriginal ECOH training programs. The model is underpinned by principles of self-determination and collaboration. It supports the use of local knowledge and power to resolve oral health disparities.

The project enabled individual and community participation in action to promote health by establishing open communication and identifying common ground and common goals, identifying appropriate elements for the oral health training program and exploring culturally appropriate content and resources (i.e. referral pathways) for the training program.

This project required working in partnerships to achieve the desired health outcomes by integrating community traditions and problem solving, looking more in depth at the Indigenous health approach- what does ‘working on the ground’ mean-what is able to be seen and what insight could be gained, advocating for action and finally giving knowledge and teaching to generations of the future through community peer education programs.

The project resulted in the creation of a course on early childhood oral health and a teacher’s guide.
