Aboriginal Health Worker Professional Review

The Northern Territory Department of Health and Community Services engaged the services of Human Capital Alliance to undertake a review, to provide accurate information about the current Aboriginal Health Worker profession and advice on strengthening its size and capability, as well as career development for Aboriginal Health Workers.

An approach was adopted which focused on methodology that can be completed and deliver required outcomes within four months. Additional and optional methodology has been proposed that would require more than four months to complete but which we believe could add real value to the consultancy outcomes.

The proposed committed methodology components were:

• Literature / document review;
• Secondary data analysis;
• Focus group discussions;
• Case studies;
• Stakeholder consultations.

The proposed additional optional methodology components are:

• Survey of AHW employers. The survey would be designed to provide data on the range of requirements identified in the RFT but would particularly inform the selection of case study employer sites. As will be detailed later, we would identify employers with strong and poor records of AHW retention so that case studies can be more focused on employers that can provide solutions;

• Survey of AHWs who have left the profession.
